Dream Cruise 5 in Hamilton

We spent part of Sunday enjoying the sights and sounds of Dream Cruise 5 at Bayfront Park in Hamilton.

We spent some time with our 1st Gear Sponsor Lucas Oil and their representatives Robyn, Tom & Tim. Thank you for letting us hang out with you, and talk about cars, and look at the race car. Tim's race car was there for everyone to have a look at and climb in if you wanted to...I was afraid I would have gotten stuck & they would have had to call over the fire department with the jaws of life...not pretty.

It was a lot of fun, and a great place for a car show, I think they got about 200 + cars, and it was a great day.

We handed out flyers for the cruise to almost every car & left a bunch for the Lucas Oil folks. I talked to alot of people about the cruise and they sounded excited, and thought the poker run/cruise was a great idea. I asked a couple of folks if they could cal us (if they were coming to give us their plate # for the license plate scavenger hunt).

It was a good day for me, I learned a few things that we will use at our cruise, got a chance to talk to some nice folks, some lots of awesome cars (even found one for sale that I really liked), and got some exercise & fresh air.

Next update in a bit.

See you in September

How this got started

Time for a little time traveling back to 1997… Amanda (our cruise hostess) was diagnosed with pauci-articular juvenile rheumatoid arthritis in February 1997 -- a form of arthritis which affects fewer than 5 large joints (hips, knees, ankles, shoulders, elbows, wrists, jaw).

In the grand scheme of things, it could be worse. She didn't have cancer, muscular distrophy, or any other potentially life-threatening disease. She had no visible signs that there was anything wrong with her other than a lump on her knee. More information on arthritis is available at http://www.arthritis.ca/.

Amanda was pretty good with everything until she had to start having injections to bring down the swelling, she didn’t enjoy the joint injections. After three rounds of joint injections it was determined that she should take Methotrexate to help with the swelling of her joints (unfortunately this was a weekly injection instead of just when her joints were swollen). We soon determined that the best way to give her this was while she was sleeping. She has been a trooper throughout the whole ordeal, and always showed a brave face even during her week long quarantine for chicken pox (in the hospital because of the medications she was taking).

She would say “You Gotta Do What you Gotta Do!”. Even with everything that was going on Amanda was able to give all of us Amanderific hugs that would squeeze the stuffing out if you.

One of the side affects for the type of arthritis Amanda has, is that it can affect her eyes causing inflammation, and in Amanda’s case it did. The eye drops that Amanda was and still is taking (at one point 25 per day), caused the pressure in her eye to rise and within six months of starting to take the drops she had to have cataract and glaucoma surgery (approx. a month apart from each other) to relieve the pressure in her eye.

Fast Forward to 2004 I was surfing the web looking for hotrod sites and what do I find www.CanadianRodder.com. What a site it is...it includes information on building cars, pictures of member’s cars and a chat board. After introducing myself and spending a few months asking questions about building my dream car (a woodie), I asked a simple little question, “Is there anything in Canada like the Power-Tour in the US?”.

After a few days of discussion it was determined that I should start it. I had been thinking of a charity event that included hotrods for awhile and I thought it would be fun, and with that Amanda’s Cruise for Juvenile Arthritis was started. The 1st cruise was held in St. Mary's at fat Chuk's hot rod shop & included a cruise up to Goderich, the beach at Grand Bend, and back down to St. Mary's. Read all about it on this blog.

Amanda's Cruise for JA 2006

Cruising the Open Road - 2006

The goals were to enjoy ourselves and our cars, have fun and raise money for charity, and that we did.

Mother nature didn’t co-operate with us completely, but 31 participants came out on a wet Saturday Sept. 30th for the second Amanda’s Cruise for Juvenile Arthritis.

17 cars joined us for the 3 hour cruise/poker run from Cambridge to Elora, Conestogo, Breslau & returning to Cambridge. The highlight of the cruise was the drive through the Montrose covered bridge.

There was lots of fun at Shade’s Mills Conservation Area for those who didn’t take part in the cruise. A parking lot poker walk, a Toonie toss sponsored by Mr. Transmission - Cambridge, Raffle, 50/50 draw, and barbeque.

The raffle table was filled with great prizes from all of our sponsors including 1st gear sponsors Garage Power, Legendary Motorcar Company, Hitman Hot Rods (Cambridge), JC’s Restoration and Supply (Kingsville), Southern Polyurethanes Inc., The Brick Brewery & Lucas Oil Products.

At the end of the day we raised $3,000.00 for Juvenile Arthritis. More information about Juvenile Arthritis can be found at www.arthritis.ca.

Pictures of the cruise can be seen at http://ca.geocities.com/acja@rogers.com.

Thank you to all of the participants and sponsors, with out you we would never be able to have this much fun.

Amanda's Cruise for JA - 2005

Cruisin’ the Open Road - 2005

What could be better than spending a beautiful Saturday on the open road?

Doing it for charity!

Hot Rod Power Tour it wasn’t, but twenty cars, including four from Windsor, one from Niagara Falls, and the rest scattered throughout Central Ontario took part in the 1st annual Amanda’s Cruise for Juvenile Arthritis on Saturday Sept 17th. The day was a big success and raised $1200.00 for the Arthritis Society in support of Juvenile Arthritis research and local programs. All participants received a goody bag that included a car wash from Fine Details and a gift from Lucas Oil Products.

The day long cruise provided lots of opportunities to meet up with old friends and to make new ones during the lunch stop in Goderich, and the BBQ in the evening at Fat Chuk’s Street Rods and Restorations.

Cruise participants took part in a poker run, license plate scavenger hunt, and an eye spy contest along the route that took them through Staffa, Kippen, Clinton, Grand Bend, Lucan and Prospect Hill.

The Circle City Cruizers hosted a wonderful lunch at the Park House in Goderich which included live music from Kim & Travis, and a chance to look at all of the cars that came out to the lunch.

The cruisers took the opportunity to check out the beach in Goderich and Grand Bend as onlookers smiled and gave thumbs up to a great line up of hot rods.

Things got even hotter in St. Marys as they fired up the BBQ for dinner, and started to hand out participant prizes, raffle prizes, and the 50/50 prize. The raffle prize table was overflowing with prizes from donators that included the TADD APC store in St. Marys, North of 49 Racing from Calgary, Dowler Karn Fuels, HD Brown, Pioneer Petroleum, and others. Everyone was hoping to win the coupon for 50% off tires from Fowler Tires, or the evening for twenty at the Brick Brewery hospitality room.

At the end of the day we raised $1200.00 in support of Juvenile Arthritis.

The 2nd annual Amanda’s Cruise for JA is scheduled for Sept 30th, 2006 at Shades Mill’s Conservation Area in Cambridge, and you can find out more information about it at
